In the first half of the twentieth century, Shanghai became a center of a variety of entertainment. In this city, women took to the stage and appeared on screen, and “female entertainment” that appealed to the masses began to flourish. This phenomenon gradually spread to Japan. Through the lenses of different forms of entertainment such as movies, wireless and wired radio, newspapers, magazines, drama, dance, sports, travel, and so on, we can clearly observe the diverse roles women played in entertainment. This book, with a multi-faced perspective and materials in multiple languages, delves deeply into the content of entertainment. It is not only a meaningful exploration of Chinese studies but also a reconstruction of research on traditional mass entertainment.
